What does the star mean on the series on the $50 bill
Stars on Compound Interest Notes are design elements. They have no special meaning, similar to stars on some Legal Tenders and Treasury Notes.
Star serial numbers on later Large Size and all small size currency indicates a “replacement note”.
Notes damaged during production are removed. Then the Bureau of Engraving and Printing prints substitutes. These notes get stars because every circulating piece of currency must have a unique serial number.
